Tevester Anderson retires… Who’s next?

In case you missed it (or have been too busy looking at the hail storm damage in the Jackson area), JSU men’s basketball coach Tevester Anderson announced today that he is retiring. The retirement goes into effect on June 30.

Here’s a link to online story.

I just spoke with Anderson, who spent the past 10 years in charge of the program.

“There comes a time when you have to walk away,” said Anderson. “This is the best time for me. I have been here 10 years. I considered it last year. My wife and I talked about it. I thought it was a good time to enjoy life and things I haven’t had a chance to do like travel, play golf and spend time with the grand kids.”

The Tigers finished 11-18 overall this season and Anderson finished with a 149-170 career mark.

Anderson isn’t leaving the cupboard bare. The Tigers lose starters Christian Williams and Jonathan Lewis, but they have former Arkansas starter (and Callaway alum) Julysses Nobles coming in after sitting out last season. Also Dundrecous Nelson returns, giving JSU two former SEC players to go with a slew of returnees like Willie Readus and Kelsey Howard.

So who will replace Anderson?

Anderson would like to see long-time JSU assistant Eric Strothers get a shot.

“I would love to see Eric Strothers have an opportunity,” Anderson said. “I hope the athletic director and administration gives him a look. He’s been with the program 20-plus years.”

Another name that has circulated around all season is Callaway head boys basketball coach Wayne Brent. Brent has college experience as well, having served as an assistant at Ole Miss.

Who are some other coaches who you would like to see considered for the job?

Here is a look back at the six other guys who came in for a final interview 10 years ago when JSU hired Anderson.

Thomas Billups – Long-time Lanier High coach has won eight state titles.

Wayne Brent – Callaway coach just won his fifth state title and fourth in last five years.

Coleman Crawford – Former Akron coach

Robert Kirby- Former Mississippi State and Georgetown coach now serving as an assistant at LSU.

Eric Strothers –  Former JSU forward has been an assistant at JSU for 20 years.

Al Perry- Former Mississippi State guard and ex-JSU assistant
